Historical Background
- India was under British rule for almost 200 years.
- After long movements, protests, and sacrifices led by leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, Sardar Patel, and Bhagat Singh, the British finally agreed to grant independence.
- At midnight on 14–15 August 1947, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, delivered the famous "Tryst with Destiny" speech, declaring India’s freedom.
How It Is Celebrated
- Flag Hoisting at the Red Fort in Delhi by the Prime Minister, followed by the national anthem and a parade.
- Cultural programs, patriotic songs, and dances are organized in schools, colleges, and offices.
- People decorate homes, streets, and vehicles with the tricolor – saffron, white, and green.
- Patriotic movies and documentaries are shown on TV, reminding citizens of the freedom struggle.
